Pet Vaccinations: Stopping Disease Before It Starts

Pet Vaccinations: Stopping Disease Before It Starts

Vaccinations are an important preventative step in keeping your pet protected from certain diseases, including rabies. Pet vaccinations play a responsible, proactive role in every wellness program and can suit every lifestyle. At Animal Care Center of Downers Grove, we take your pet's well-being very seriously. Therefore, we provide core and lifestyle vaccines to safeguard both cats and dogs against infection.

Our Core and Lifestyle Vaccines

Core pet vaccinations are essential to your pet's safety, and we recommend them for both our canine and feline patients. We give lifestyle vaccines based on each pet's unique lifestyle needs.

  • Rabies vaccination (core)
  • Distemper/Parvo combo - includes hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza and coronavirus (core)
  • Bordetella vaccine
  • Lyme disease vaccine
  • Canine influenza vaccine

  • Rabies vaccination (core)
  • Distemper/respiratory virus combo (core)
  • Leukemia

What Makes Vaccines Effective?

Like human vaccines, pet vaccines contain antigens designed to mimic certain viruses and stimulate an immune system response. When we vaccinate your pet, their immune system produces antibodies to fight and eliminate the antigens. Thus, if your pet is infected in the future, their immune system will be able to recognize and resist the virus.

When You Should Start Your Pet's Vaccinations

Puppies and kittens should start their vaccinations at 6-8 weeks old to boost their immune systems and provide necessary protection. Once they've received the vaccines they need in their first year, they will need to be revaccinated regularly to maintain their immunity. This includes their core vaccines and any annual lifestyle vaccines they need, such as Bordetella and influenza. However your pet lives their life, we will do our best to keep them healthy and happy for as long as possible.
